EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
COURSE DESCRIPTION

ECET 1101-6 ORIENTATION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Orientation to the profession.  Topics include:  professionalism, family relationships, individual and cultural diversity, typical and atypical child development, developmentally appropriate practice, observation and assessment, learning environment, health and safety, and guidance.  Minimum 6 hour lab observation.
ECET 1102-6 FOUNDATIONS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT
A survey of the theoretical models and quality program components available to parents and children.
ECET 1103-6 FOOD AND NUTRITION EDUCATION
Basic study of food groups, nutrients, meal planning, appropriate snacks, service sizes, problem solving techniques for problem eaters, and providing nutritional information to parents.  Lab experience, Food preparation and Service.
ECET 1104-6 SAFE, HEALTHY LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Students learn components of safe and healthy learning and play environments.  Areas of study include:  arrangement of classroom and playground, principles of health practices such as toileting, handwashing, toy sanitation, food preparation, immunizations, etc.  Detection of suspected child abuse and current state and federal reporting requirements and procedures will also be included in this unit.
ECET 1105-6 CHILD DEVELOPMENT (B-8)
The study of the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects of young children and their application to the care, guidance, and development of the child birth through eight.  Lab experience.
ECET 1106-6 GUIDANCE, BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE
A study of behavior that is normal, average, and/or predictable for specific states of development (mental, physical, and social) and for the age of the child.  Recognizing specific patterns of behavior and understanding causes.  Involves building guidance skills, handling disruptive behavior and spotting signs of child abuse.  Suggestions are given for handling well-behaved and disruptive children.  Emphasis is on the transition from being guided by a caregiver, using positive techniques, to self-control.  Lab experience.
ECET 1201-6 CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT:  INDOORS AND OUTDOORS
Discusses all areas of the physical space of a center, appropriate choices for furniture, organizing the basic areas, center arrangement, and creating a problem-solving file.  Parent involvement, all forms of communication, and dealing with volunteers.  Also covered are the design of the playground, safety, supervision, types of play, play items, and outdoor play activities.
ECET 1202-6 LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH LITERATURE AND DRAMATIC PLAY
The focus is upon learning to select developmentally appropriate stories and related activities for children.  Students develop a book list, make puppets and flannel board materials.  Also deals with setting up and implementing housekeeping area and socializing with the other children in a positive manner.  The importance of manuscript handwriting is also addressed.  Lab experience.
ECET 1203-6 MUSIC AND MOVEMENT
Songs and fingerplays, creative movement, rhythm band, listening, singing, and dramatization of all types of activities that allow children to expend energy while learning to participate in group activities.
ECET 1204-6 CREATIVE ART
Students learn the importance of child-centered, developmentally appropriate art projects.  Emphasizes value of art in physical, mental, social, and emotional growth of young children.
ECET 1205-6 MATH AND SCIENCE
Appropriate activities in the curriculum to aid children in learning basic math concepts such as big and little, long and short.  Varied science experiences and ideas.  Information is given to help the student feel comfortable teaching these features.
ECET 1206-6 CLINICAL PRACTICUM I
Deals with handling direct and indirect learning experiences, themes, writing lesson plans, building a curriculum unit, and field trip planning.  Creating a resume and interview preparation is also included in this course.  Supervised introductory field experience including observation and possible curriculum implementation.
ECET 1301-6 FAMILY DYNAMICS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Developing a partnership with parents, keeping parents informed, parent involvement, parent-teacher conferences, parenting skills training, community resource referrals.  Lab experience.
ECET 1302-6 DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENT
A study of the basic instruments and checklists leading to competency in measuring children for developmental growth and progress.  Training in observational techniques will be included.  Students will become familiar with common assessment tools and interpreting those results.  The course will address referral procedures and discuss community support programs.  Lab experience.
ECET 1303-6 DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
This course covers physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and adaptive disabilities as well as giftedness.  The students will explore different techniques for the adaptation and modification of early childhood curriculum and practices.
ECET 1304-6 ADMINISTRATION OF CHILD CARE CENTERS
A study of administration practices which reveals the responsibilities of an owner and/or director.  Specific topics include center image, licensing standards, national accreditation, staff-management relations, CDA standards, tax laws, legal liabilities, and organization of finances.  Lab experience shadowing owner and/or director.
ECET 1305-6 CLINICAL PRACTICUM II
Students will apply their knowledge and skills through practical experiences in an accredited or instructor approved site.  The experience will provide the student with gradually increasing responsibilities.  By the end of this practicum, the student will have assumed the role of the "teacher" in the setting.
